Water CrisisÂ
Importance of clean drinking waterÂ
We can survive without water only for a few days. Without it, there would be no plants, no animals, and no human beings.Â
Lack of clean water could lead to sickness and death. We need clean water to disinfect our environment, prepare our food and wash our hands. These necessities are at risk with the current water crisis.
What are some of the causes of this water crisis?
Due to Climate change, many countries suffer yearly from forest fires, caused by extreme temperatures and sometimes by the irresponsible behavior of some people. The scarcity of water resources to put them out makes these situations worse.Â
The same happens with droughts, which affect crops and people’s access to food and also water to drink.Â
Another source of water problems it’s its use in productive industries such as mining, and agriculture. At least in agriculture, water is used to grow vegetables, so it has a benefit for the population. However, in the case of mining, it is more complicated because they use in their processes large amounts of water, and then that water remains polluted, so it can’t be used again.Â
Possible solutions for this water crisisÂ
There are some things that could help to fight this crisis, like building damns and harvesting water from rain to use it later.
Another great solution would be making desalination plants, which take away the salt of the ocean, so the water can be used for drinking and also for industries like mining. This option is very expensive, but it seems that shortly these wouldn’t be optional.
Finally, we can do our part too, consciously using water, not leaving open faucets when we brush our teeth, watering our plants only when it’s needed, etc. Our contribution is small, but if many of us change our ways, we can have a positive impact and help this situation before it’s too late.Â
