Major Tom to Ground Control – Music After Planet’s Destruction

Some years ago, I was with friends philosophizing about life and death, and we started to talk about what would happen with music and art, in general, after humanity reached its extinction.

Of course, I hope this situation will not happen soon, but many scientists have said that this is inevitable, and the sun, which is not eternal, will collapse and no longer exist. And before that occurs, the planet Earth will be absorbed by the sun. Even though this would happen in around 5,000,000,000 years, humanity could last less than that (unless we go to Mars or another place), because of wars, climate change, pandemics, overpopulation, etc.

Loving music so much as I do, has always intrigued me, what will happen to it after there’s no human left to enjoy it?

Beautiful and complex creations such as Beethoven’s Symphony N° 5 or the album: Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by The BeatlesThere are so many wonderful works of art, that have meant so much to people and tell the story of how we are as a society. It would be such a shame that they end up vanishing in the air, or space, just as David Bowie’s Major Tom in Space Oddity.

I think it would be great to save them in a time capsule to remain there after our extinction.

Sure, anyone could say, why it would be worth keeping it if no one human would be left to hear and enjoy them, but maybe other intelligent beings could appreciate them in the future.

I know that this sounds so far-fetched now. But the day will come when this will be a real scenario, and it will be so catastrophic, that besides us not being here, all our creations aren’t either. Especially music, which is one of our best creations, if not the best.
